The Brief

A stunning joint venture between the Canary Wharf Group and Land Securities, 20 Fenchurch Street became a staple of London’s cityscape in 2015. The award-winning building offers 680,000 sq ft. of commercial space, with some of the capital’s most dramatic views from the rooftop Sky Garden. As a building designed to support the needs of thousands of busy professionals, the owners sought an IT partner who could take ownership of a huge array of critical systems. From building-wide cabling and networking, WAN and cellular signal coverage to the provision of IT equipment and radio communications for the management team.

We helped 20 Fenchurch Street deliver world-class connectivity for their tenants.

The Solution

A tall order

Redstone were chosen to curate the entire infrastructure project over 37 storeys. This meant providing consultancy for a broad range of solutions, and becoming the single point of accountability for the ambitious project. This included all IT requirements for landlord operational services, tenant building services, and services to commercial zones within the building.

The key to the entire project was integration. Every system was designed to interconnect with the others and offer compatibility for future expansion.

We started with a room-by-room assessment of technology needs to build a resilient, efficient Landlord cabling infrastructure. This acts as the backbone of our integrated systems.

This was then used to integrate the most critical systems: Building Management (BMS), Security (CCTV and Access Control), elevator management and energy management. All interconnected over an IP network infrastructure, and capable of remote monitoring and control via secure VPN.

To keep operational teams in touch we provided an IP telephony system to reception and management suites. A Private Mobile Radio (PMR) repeater system also made sure that management and security were in contact throughout the building’s stairwells and lift cars.

After creating the rock-solid operational systems, which keep tenants happy and the building profitable, we added user-level connectivity. Both wired and wireless connectivity was provided to all areas controlled by the Landlord, and additional wireless access was provided for guest in public areas.

A building of this size also presents challenges for cellular and satellite connectivity. To ensure that tenants enjoyed optimum mobile coverage, we used a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) to keep signals strong.

In order to guarantee the same high quality for tenants with satellite broadcast requirements, we took out a technical site survey. This let us know that wind would pose a challenge for such a unique structure, and led us to design and deploy a line-of-sight satellite system on a suitable adjacent building.
