Dorsett Hospitality International, set up 2007, is a subsidiary of the Far East Consortium International Limited. It owns a fast-growing portfolio of hotels in Asia-Pacific and the UK. With a unique business model, the Group owns and manages all of its hotels, with a strong focus on strategic growth and development. Located in the heart of London’s financial district, Dorsett City is the Group’s second London hotel. As a major £15m redevelopment opening in 2017, the sleek, contemporary-style hotel will occupy 13 storeys, with 267 rooms including 12 suites. Key features include two restaurants, a 24-hour gym, event space and destination rooftop terrace bar with a 360-degree panoramic view of London’s iconic skyline
Dorsett City has been created by multiple design and construction partners who completely redeveloped an existing building situated between the Grade I listed St Botolph’s Church and Aldgate Tube Station. Following the main construction phase, the Group needed a security infrastructure specialist, with in-depth expertise in smart building installations, to supply, install and maintain a new IP surveillance solution. A key requirement was a partner who could provide seamless project coordination while working with a complex network of contractors.
With a distinctive aesthetic style, the hotel will offer high-quality, upscale accommodation. With this in mind, the group had stringent criteria about the deliverables and types of surveillance cameras required, along with a firmly fixed budget. However, within the hotel multiple structural and aesthetic issues had to be addressed to position cameras unobtrusively while delivering the visibility requiring to ensure effective surveillance. This was a particular issue in the stairwells and on the rooftop terrace bar.
Added to this, being on a constrained site in an architecturally sensitive, typically dense, urban part of London presented major logistical challenges, both in terms of design options and actual installation. Also, being located right next to Aldgate Station, meant any external surveillance of the area beside the station would have to comply fully with Transport for London policies on the use and storage of CCTV images.
Having carefully assessed the risks and requirements, RedstoneConnect supplied, installed and commissioned a customised IP surveillance solution designed to maximise the long-term return on the Group’s investment. While the Dorsett City team originally had originally requested equipment from certain vendors, the Redstone design team proposed an alternative approach to deliver a lot more for less. As an independent integrator, Redstone specified best-of-breed models from world-leading manufacturers capable of delivering the high-performance, quality and resilience required at a much more attractive cost. The suite of 140 cameras comprised a carefully tailored mix, including dome, bullet and PTZ models, for both interior and exterior use.
A key aspect of the delivery was bespoke engineering to overcome numerous structural and aesthetic challenges. Notable examples included reinforced fittings to securely place cameras on a wall separating the hotel and the passageway to the adjoining tube-station. For the cameras in the stairwells, special back boxes were designed to ensure a perfect aesthetic finish without limiting coverage. Special fittings were also created for the rooftop terrace cameras to prevent them blocking the concertina doors.
RedstoneConnect acted as a single point of contact for the entire surveillance installation, to keep this aspect of the project on track. As part of an extensive network of contractors, RedstoneConnect worked closely with multiple partners to ensure that the surveillance solution was implemented efficiently, to a high standard and in full compliance with the highest industry standards. Designed for ease-of-use, the system will be operated day-to-day by hotel personnel, with service back-up and maintenance provided by our Redstone team.
Scalable and futureproof, the surveillance solution has given the Dorsett team the ability to:
